Interact with Programmable XBee using the legacy version of XCTU

The following is for the older XCTU versions.

Your programmable XBee needs to be put into bypass mode before the XCTU can talk to the Ember radio on the module. Programmable XBees have two processors, a Freescale processor which can be programmed with the CodeWarrior compiler and they also have the Ember chip for RF. The Freescale processor is in charge and talks to the Ember radio in API mode. To be able to talk to the Ember radio directly with the XCTU, follow these directions:

To put the unit into bypass mode:

Accessing the Boot Loader Menu of the FreeScale Processor

1. Make sure the serial port to the PXBee is not being used (maybe by Eclipse?)
2. Run XCTU - at least version 5275
3. Select the appropriate serial port (if you are not sure, take note of ports selected, close XCTU, disconnect your cable from your PC, run XCTU, and you will see one less port listed. Close XCTU, attach your cable., then run XCTU again. You will now see the added port that is connected to your XBIB)
4. Set the terminal parameters as follows
a. Baud rate = 115200
b. Flow Control = NONE
c. Data Bits = 8
d. Parity = NONE
e. Stop Bits = 1
5. Either operating mode is OK - API or not
6. Select the Terminal tab
7. Uncheck RTS
8. Check DTR (may already be checked)
9. Check Break
10. Press and release the Reset on the XBIB
11. Uncheck Break
12. Place the cursor in the Terminal window
13. Press Enter - may need to do this more than once
14. Unit should respond with the BootLoader menu

From here, you can go to Modem Configuration tab and click on "Read", you will then be able to assign a PAN id, etc....
